A bear was killed by a vehicle on the highway in West Vancouver, says North Shore Black Bear Society.
This Monday, a citizen called the society to say they had seen a dead bear on Cypress Mountain.
The society reached the spot to find the intact body of a young male bear.
“There were no visible injuries. We estimated he had passed a few days earlier but were perplexed by the location and position of his body,” the society said.
It appears the bear was killed last week by a vehicle and his body was moved to another location.
“Thanks to two people reaching out we were able to determine that we have lost one bear and not two. In addition, we were able to provide education to various agencies who have helps us to put the pieces together over recent days,” the society said.
The society has named the bear Raven. “He had a black muzzle and ravens and turkey vultures hovered as we said our goodbyes,” the society said.
“Every time we visit Cypress we hold our breath in anticipation of seeing dead or injured wildlife on the road. Many people using that area drive dangerously. The cannabis wrappers found next to Raven’s body and tire marks on the nearby road clearly show a lack of respect for the safety of all living beings,” the society noted.
