As many as 11,000 people visited the new ice rink in The Shipyards in the first two weeks of its launch. The ice rink opened on December 19, 2019.

“The number of visitors is based on number of people on the ice from December 19 – 31. The Shipyards Skate Plaza site hosts do an hourly count,” said Stephanie Smiley, the communications officer for the City of North Vancouver.

The 12,000 sq. ft. outdoor skate plaza will be open for the winter months and includes a looped skating trail to complement the open rink area.

It will be open from 12 pm to 7 pm daily.

The City of North Vancouver hopes to keep the ice open until mid-March, weather permitting, Smiley said.

The covered 12,000 sq ft venue will offer skate rentals for $7, free helmets and skate aides. Those who have their own skates can skate for free.

Supervision is not provided at any time, and helmets are mandatory for all kids 12 and under and are available free of charge until supplies last.

No food or drink is permitted, and the plaza will close periodically for ice cleaning.

Underground parking, new public washrooms, ample seating and viewing areas and heritage elements and features are other inviting features of The Shipyards, an ambitious project the city has been working on for the past few years.
