Alert: Snowstorm headed to Metro Vancouver

staff report
January 16, 2024 7:44am

Metro Vancouver residents are advised to brace for a snowstorm. A snowfall warning is in effect for the region, effective tonight until Wednesday afternoon or early evening.

The snowfall warning is in effect for Metro Vancouver, Fraser Valley- west including Abbotsford, Greater Victoria, Howe Sound, Whistler, Sunshine Coast, Southern Gulf Islands, East Vancouver Island, Inland Vancouver Island, Sea to Sky – Squamish to Whistler, Malahat Highway – Goldstream to Mill Bay.

The mainland side and southern Sunshine Coast are expected to receive approximately 10 to 20 cm of snow, while the Vancouver Island side and northern Sunshine Coast may get around 10 cm of snow.  The Greater Victoria area may experience a mix of rain and snow, gradually easing off in the afternoon or early evening on Wednesday.

The warning also highlights a possible risk of freezing rain in southern sections near the United States border.

Environment Canada cautions that heavy snowfall may result in sudden reductions in visibility, making it difficult for drivers to navigate highways, roads, walkways and parking lots. Therefore, drivers are advised to be mindful of changing road conditions and plan their routes accordingly.

As the weather in the mountains can change suddenly, resulting in hazardous driving conditions, it is recommended that drivers adjust their driving behaviour and use winter tires and chains. Road conditions can be checked at drivebc.ca
