Avalanche kills two snow bikers in Pemberton

Staff report
December 29, 2020 7:32pm

Two snow bikers have died in an avalanche in the Goat Creek area in Pemberton.

At approximately 10 am, the bodies of two men were located within the avalanche debris field in the area, said Pemberton RCMP.

The BC Coroners Service was notified and is investigating, and their names will not be released.

Pemberton RCMP was notified of the missing snow bikers in the area of Goat Creek yesterday.

Police learned that back country guides in the area had reported a fresh ‘crown’ along the side of the Goat Peak, indicating that an avalanche had been triggered.

The guides further advised the avalanche debris area was 100m wide by 200m long and they were unable to locate any active beacons in the area or if the snow bikes made it to the other side of the avalanche debris due to the terrain and darkness.

Pemberton Search and Rescue were notified, but the search couldn’t take place at night.

The search began today around 8:30 am, and search crews were able to locate parts of the snow bikes in the debris field, following which a beacon search was conducted in the immediate area.
