The BC Green Caucus has announced it will not renew its cooperation agreement with the governing BC NDP, marking the end of a partnership that was designed to bring stability to the province’s minority government situation.

In a press release, the Greens accused Premier David Eby’s government of failing to deliver on key 2025 commitments and adopting an increasingly centralized approach that has sidelined collaborative governance.

“The BC Greens entered the CARGA agreement in good faith because British Columbians needed stability and results,” said Rob Botterell, BC Greens MLA for Saanich North and the Islands. “But when the BC NDP failed to deliver on clear 2025 commitments—commitments they agreed to complete—it raised serious questions about their ability to execute, and it broke the trust that agreement depended on.”

The Cooperation and Responsible Government Accord (CARGA), reached on March 12, 2025, outlined shared priorities between the two parties and included provisions for annual renegotiation and quarterly progress reports.

According to the press release, over half of the 2025 commitments remain incomplete. The Greens highlighted several unfulfilled promises, including insufficient progress on regional transit for the Sea-to-Sky region, no expansion of public coverage for psychologist appointments despite $50 million allocated, no support for Community Health Centres with $15 million unspent, and no review of social assistance and disability assistance rates.

Jeremy Valeriote, BC Greens MLA for West Vancouver – Sea to Sky, criticized what he characterized as the government’s deteriorating approach to collaboration. “This government is increasingly centralized, less collaborative, and less willing to work with partners,” he said. “We’ve seen it in legislation, in labour disputes, in failed consultations and reports not acted upon.”

The press release noted that fiscal challenges do not justify broken commitments. “The NDP’s fiscal situation is not an excuse for broken commitments,” Botterell said. “We brought forward solutions, including serious revenue options. The consequences of this government’s fiscal choices shouldn’t be downloaded onto working British Columbians.”

The Greens also pointed to widening ideological differences on core issues. “On climate, Indigenous rights, civil liberties, and other core issues, the gap between our parties is clear and growing,” Valeriote said. “We offered stability and bold action; the BC NDP chose instability and status quo.”

Despite ending the formal partnership, the Green Caucus emphasized its ongoing commitment to British Columbians. “Our agreement with the BC NDP is now over, but our agreement with the people of British Columbia is as strong as ever,” Valeriote stated. The development raises questions about the stability of the current government and how the NDP will navigate the legislature without Green support.
