Braemar elementary students raise $3,100 for supportive housing

Braemar Grade 7 students Rowan and Michaela recently presented a cheque for $3,100 to Community Builders, a non-profit that has been offering supportive housing services in Vancouver and surrounding areas since 2001.

In just 11 days, Rowan and Michaela rallied the generous spirit of their school community to exceed their fundraising goal, which was originally set at $1,000 to $2,000.

They held presentations for staff and students and then followed up with daily announcements and reminders.

One class alone raised $719, with some students donating their birthday money for the good cause.

Grade 7 students Rowan and Michaela present a cheque for $3,100, the result of their fundraising efforts, to Denver Snider, a safe and supportive housing manager with Community Builders.

In explaining how they chose Community Builders as the recipient of their efforts, Rowan and Michaela shared how they were impressed that the organization built homes for those who need shelter.

With the colder weather upon us, the girls recognized that the more vulnerable would need community support now more than ever.

Denver Snider, Safe and Supportive Housing Manager for Community Builders, accepted the donation on behalf of the organization. He shared that Community Builders prides itself on its ability to run three shelters on a 24-hour basis and on its work in helping those who are seeking a more permanent shelter solution find such shelter.

Denver estimates that with this donation, Community Builders will be able to provide Christmas dinner to approximately 200 to 250 people.

A beaming Sandra Singh, school Principal, said, “I am absolutely thrilled by the generosity from the Braemar children and their families and very proud of the girls.”
