CapU to hold ‘car-vocation’ convocation ceremonies

May 7, 2021 12:01pm

This June, Capilano University will recognize graduates with a series of drive-in convocation ceremonies that offer a physically distanced alternative to virtual events. Twelve “car-vocation” convocations will take place over three days from June 9 – 11, 2021.

“We want to offer our graduates something fun and celebratory that fully complies with the current public health orders,” said Julie Vanderyagt, manager of university events at Capilano University. “This creative approach delivers a means for graduates to mark the occasion and celebrate their achievements in a memorable way.”

To comply with the public health orders for COVID-19, only 50 graduates may attend each ceremony in a vehicle with members of their household. There will be four ceremonies per day for three days, and attendees will remain in their vehicles for their ceremony.

Each ceremony will be viewable as a livestream event to include graduates who are unable to attend in-person. Pre-registration is required to attend the drive-in ceremony. Each ceremony will be recorded and available for viewing on CapU’s convocation ceremonies webpage.

For students without a vehicle, the University is collaborating with EVO car share vehicles to support the full drive-in experience, and offering a physically distanced outside seating area for those who do not have a driver’s licence.

Graduates are invited to decorate their cars for the occasion and compete for best decorated vehicle at each ceremony. The convocation ceremonies will take place in the University’s upper parking lot, behind the Nat & Flora Bosa Centre for Film & Animation, framed by the surrounding forests and North Shore mountains.
