Metro Vancouver will carry out routine maintenance at the Cleveland Dam from September to mid-December 2025, warning that river levels in the Capilano River will fluctuate during this work.
The agency says the spillway gate will be lowered on September 12 to prepare for winter storm management. During the maintenance period, people may notice changes to the dam’s appearance, including the raising and lowering of the gate, along with shifts in river flow.
“People may see the raising or lowering of the spillway gate and changes in Capilano River water levels,” Metro Vancouver said in a statement.
The Cleveland Dam, located in North Vancouver, is part of the region’s drinking water system. Metro Vancouver says the work is part of its efforts to ensure the dam continues to operate safely and reliably.
Metro Vancouver also reminds the public that swimming is not permitted in the Capilano River, and that the river and shoreline present hazards such as cold water, strong currents, sudden surges, and hidden obstacles. Whitewater paddling is not recommended, and anyone entering the river does so at their own risk.
Near-real-time river level information is updated hourly on Metro Vancouver’s website.
