Construction will begin soon at the new and seismically safe Handsworth Secondary in North Vancouver.

The new school will feature flexible learning spaces with room for 1,400 students – a 200-seat increase from the current facility.

Handsworth students, educators and families can expect the new school to be ready by September 2022. The BC Government said it has invested $68.7 million in the school.

“With construction now beginning, students and families are one step closer to having a modern learning facility that will serve the community for generations to come,” said Rob Fleming, Minister of Education.

With the new Argyle Secondary set to open in September, and a new Handsworth Secondary on the way, thousands of North Vancouver students will soon be learning in the safe, engaging and inspiring classrooms, said Bowinn Ma, MLA for North Vancouver-Lonsdale.

Since September 2017, the province said it has announced over $935 million for seismic upgrades or replacements at 41 schools, which includes $92.4 million in North Vancouver.

“We are thrilled to be able to provide our students, staff and community with a brand-new secondary school, which will consist of a modern design and flexible spaces,” said Christie Sacré, chair, North Vancouver Board of Education.

Meanwhile, upgrades are also underway at Mountainside Secondary School.
