Contract given to study improvements to Upper Levels Highway

Staff report
November 7, 2019 1:01pm

BC government has awarded $110,000 contract to Parsons Inc. to identify future improvements to the Upper Level Highway.

The study is part of a long-term plan for the section of Highway 1 between Lynn Valley Road and the Horseshoe Bay ferry terminal, a key east-west route for North Shore residents.

“This study will identify potential future improvements to the Upper Levels Highway that connects people to ferries, the Sea to Sky Highway, work and school, and the many recreational activities this region has to offer,” said Claire Trevena, Minister of Transportation and Infrastructure.

The scope of work includes assessing current and future performance of the route, predicting travel demand to the year 2050, and evaluating what improvements can be made. The study will provide options on highway upgrades, along with opportunities to boost travel by transit and incorporate active transportation.

“Determining the next steps for Highway 1 builds on the work we’re doing now to ensure access and mobility on the North Shore into the future,” said Bowinn Ma, MLA for North Vancouver-Lonsdale.

I can’t believe that it isn’t obvious that the Capilano corner requires improvement ASAP. There is an accident there almost daily. I would love to know the cost to ICBC for vehicle damage and personal injury, not to mention the response and repair costs to the HWY. (FOIPA?)
The amount of money spent on a rarely used bike lane should have been put towards a fix to the corner.

This IS part of the Trans CANADA! Put in access routes for the North Shore and leave the#1 as is. The alleged improvements thus far are so ridiculous and literally congest traffic for several kilometers in all directions, but only accommodate a small fraction of the population. Unless, once again, it is designed to meet the needs of local politicians first and foremost!!
