COVID-19 outbreak claims nine lives at West Vancouver care home

56 residents have tested positive in the outbreak at Capilano Care Centre in West Vancouver
Staff report

COVID-19 has claimed nine lives at the Capilano Care Centre in West Vancouver.

Vancouver Coastal Health (VCH) has confirmed that 56 residents have tested positive for COVID-19 at Capilano Care Centre in West Vancouver since the outbreak was declared on November 9.

Seven residents have recovered, but nine residents have passed away from the disease.

A total of 38 staff have tested positive to date and 20 staff members have been cleared by VCH Public Health to return to work.

The remaining positive staff members are in self-isolation at home.

In a statement, Revera, the company that runs the Capilano Care Centre, said they are following pandemic outbreak protocols and infection control practices.

“All residents are monitored twice daily for symptoms. All staff are screened at the beginning and end of their shifts and are being cohorted to work in assigned resident areas,” said Larry Roberts, the director of communications,”

All staff are required to wear an appropriate mask and eye protection in the home, and enhanced cleaning is being done at Capilano Care Centre, he added.

“We are frequently disinfecting high touch surfaces like handrails and doors, resident rooms, common areas and staff rooms. All residents in the home are to remain in their rooms at all times.”

At the direction of Public Health, all indoor and outdoor visits are cancelled temporarily, although essential visits for palliative residents will be permitted.

If the hundreds of billions of dollars that the government has spent on shut downs and multi-millions of dollars people have spent on masks went directly to care homes and people with compromised immune systems, I believe things would have turned out for the better. This is been poorly managed.

Very disappointing – if they are doing what they say…are they telling the truth because how do 9 people die if the protocols are in place???
