District of North Vancouver buys commercial property for over $9 million

The commercial property at 1801 Capilano Road in Lions Gate Village was purchased for $9,100,000

District of North Vancouver has purchased a commercial property in the Lions Gate Village area for more than $9 million.

DNV acquired 1801 Capilano Road to support the Lions Gate Public Realm Strategy and the Lower Capilano Village Centre Implementation Plan. The decision was made in a special council meeting this July, but was made public in October.

The purchase will improve access to Lions Gate Village Centre, and provide a visual and physical gateway to the Village Plaza from Capilano Road, said Courtenay Rannard, communication specialist for DNV.

She said crossroads will extend Hope Road across Capilano Road, improving safety for those travelling in and out of the area, with a focus on pedestrians and active transportation. “The crossroads requires only a portion of 1801 Capilano Road, and staff is currently assessing options for the remainder of the land, which will be subject to Council review and approval, and funding allocation,” Rannard added.

A mixed-use development, social and supportive housing, or disposing of any remainder lands surplus to the District’s needs are some other options for the remainder of the land.

The Lions Gate neighbourhood is located close to the Lions Gate Bridge, north of the intersection of Marine Drive and Capilano Road. The Lower Capilano Marine Village Centre Implementation Plan envisions this area as: “A gateway to the District introduction that will function as a vibrant, walkable neighbourhood with local serving businesses, jobs, community recreation opportunities and a range of housing options.”
