DNV hires four new firefighters

District of North Vancouver Fire Services (DNVFRS) has hired four new firefighters who will replace four current members who have retired or are retiring soon.

The new members are currently undergoing training.

The District of North Vancouver will also be purchasing a brand-new fire truck that will be used in all three North Shore municipalities.

Currently, DNVFRS has seven front-line apparatus fire trucks — five engine trucks, one rescue truck and one tower truck.

The new vehicle is meant to replace the current rescue truck, which is at its end of life, says Courtenay Rannard, the communications coordinator for DNV.

“The truck will be used to respond to incidents anywhere across the North Shore and is not limited to any specific area in the district,” she said.

DNVFRS also provides emergency services to West Vancouver and the City of North Vancouver via a shared services agreement.

The class 8 purpose-built truck will be able to seat up to five firefighters, and provide for the stowage of equipment in-body, use of external lockers and atop the roof.

The DNVFRS operates from five fire halls located strategically throughout DNV, each equipped with modern, up-to-date vehicles and equipment.

There are 130 full-time personnel. In 2018, DNVFRS responded to 4,447 calls. Of those, 11 per cent were fire calls, 11 per cent were motor vehicle incidents, 18 per cent ringing alarms, while 56 per cent were first medical response calls and 3 per cent were rescues.
