DNV to accept applications for short-term rental business

Staff report
March 21, 2025 10:08am

The District of North Vancouver will begin accepting applications for short-term rental business licenses on April 14, 2025. The moves come as the district works to align local rules with new provincial requirements for short-term rentals. The province has introduced a registry system for these rentals, which takes effect in May 2025.

Short-term rentals, such as those listed on platforms like Airbnb, have previously been unregulated in the District. However, under new provincial legislation, the District is working to license them. The District of North Vancouver says the application process will be expedited, allowing hosts to meet the May 1, 2025, provincial registration deadline.

District is considering bylaw changes to allow and regulate short-term rentals. These regulations, the district says, will ensure fairness, reduce noise, and protect long-term rental housing. Hosts must apply for a District business license before obtaining a provincial registration number.  The District is currently considering bylaw changes for short-term rentals.

Council gave first reading on March 3,  and a public hearing is scheduled for April 1.  “We expect to share more details on the timing of business licence applications for short-term rentals,” District said.

The new provincial regulations require all short-term rental operators to register by May 1, 2025. By May 31, platforms like Airbnb must remove listings without valid registration numbers. After June 1, non-registered hosts will no longer be able to accept bookings, and any existing unregistered reservations will be cancelled.
