A collision between a snowplow dump truck and a green Kia SUV has killed an eight-year-old boy, and BC Highway Patrol is asking for witnesses and dash camera video to help learn exactly what happened.
The collision happened on December 7, 2024, just after 8 a.m. on Highway 3 just outside of Castlegar. Road conditions were cold and icy, with freezing rain.
A pedestrian also received life-altering injuries when the Kia hit him after it spun away from the dump truck. The pedestrian, a 57-year-old Castlegar man, had stopped to assist an unrelated vehicle that drove into a ditch.
“We are looking for dash camera video or people who may have seen the green Kia or the yellow snowplow dump truck in the moments leading up to the crash, says Corporal Michael McLaughlin with BC Highway Patrol. “BC Highway Patrol has already spoken to multiple witnesses, but for obvious reasons we want to make sure we investigate thoroughly.”
The boy who died was in the green Kia SUV with his five-year-old brother, and the boys’ 44-year-old stepfather who was driving. Both the stepfather and brother reported minor physical injuries. The family lives in the Nelson area.
The driver of the snowplow dump truck, a 65-year-old man from the Castlegar area, appears to be unhurt. Anyone with information is asked to call the Nelson BC Highway Patrol at 250-354-5180.
