Expect delays in the Park Royal area starting next month as the mall management starts improvement work on the Welch Street Bridge.
The improvements to the bridge crossing the Capilano River would enhance safety and connectivity to the Spirit Trail, Park Royal says.
During weekdays, the bridge would accommodate alternating traffic controlled by flaggers and signals, which would result in delays, Park Royal warns.
On a few occasions, the bridge will be closed for work at night.
These improvements are being made in partnership with the Squamish Nation and District of West Vancouver.
The bridge was constructed around 1976. Though it has undergone periodic maintenance and repairs, more intervention is required to ensure ongoing service.
As part of the improvements, Park Royal plans to widen the bridge to accommodate 3.5m shared pathway along the south side.
A new parapet and railing will provide separation between vehicles and pedestrians as well as cyclists. The bridge deck will be rehabilitated, and a dedicated right‐turn lane from Park Royal south to east bound bridge traffic lane will also be added.
Park Royal also plans to add replace the existing stairs to underside of the bridge with a new steel staircase.
Shared pathway crossing at the intersection of Tomahawk Avenue, Bridge Road and Kwumkwum Road will be improved for better sightlines and crossings for all bridge users.
Squamish Nation “fishing” signage kiosks will also be relocated for better visibility.
The work is expected to be complete in June this year.
