‘Fines instead of warning’: New solid waste bylaw comes into effect in DNV

Fines are $100 for the first offence, and $500 for repeat offences
Staff report
December 2, 2020 10:10am

The District of North Vancouver has changed its Solid Waste Bylaw to minimize attractants for local wildlife, especially bears.

The rules came into effect yesterday, December 1.

As of December 1, carts that are at the curb before 5:30am – including the night before –will be subject to fines instead of a warning.

Fines are $100 for the first offence, and $500 for repeat offences.

There will be no warning, but fines for those who leave carts out before 5:30 am.

“Stronger penalties are being implemented to help reduce the number of bears destroyed in our community due to dependence on human food sources,” DNV said.

These changes are in response to resident feedback and are similar to actions taken by other municipalities that have bears in the community, DNV added.

Empty carts must also be removed from the curb within 18 hours of collection.

“If you have already received a ticket for setting your carts out early, you may receive another ticket in this time period,” DNV said.
