Four arrested for blocking rush-hour traffic on Iron Workers Memorial Bridge

Four anti-logging protesters were arrested for blocking rush-hour traffic on the Iron Workers Memorial Bridge this morning.

In a social media update, Vancouver Police said the protesters are being taken to jail and will face multiple charges related to mischief and blocking the roadway.

VPD also towed three vehicles from the blockade. Traffic is now back to normal on Ironworkers Bridge, though people can expect delays at the Lions Gate Bridge.

Supporters of Save Old Growth announced early morning today they will block the Trans-Canada Highway to protest government inaction on old growth logging in British Columbia.

“Following the first wave of disruptions in January, which resulted in 54 arrests, Save Old Growth had paused to give the government time to pass legislation however there has been no action or statement from the government and so disruption of the highway will resume at an escalated intensity, starting this morning,” the protestors said in an email.

Seven supporters have also begun hunger strike calling for a public meeting with Minister Katrine Conroy on the protection of the last remaining old growth forests in BC.

The group also plans to Stop Highway 413  in Ontario to oppose a new highway that would destroy critical wetlands, farm land and forests around Toronto.
