A provincial non-profit has a pilot program for North Shore residents to recycle their used oil, given that used oil is not accepted at the North Shore Transfer Station.
The BC Used Oil Management Association (BCUOMA) has a mobile pick option in North Shore for used oil, filters, and anti-freeze.
The pilot program is available to North Van and West Van residents, and there is no limit as long the oil is coming from a household.
North Shore residents can call (866) 489-4483) to schedule a pickup, and the association will collect the used oil for free.
Residents can also search for locations where they can find a recycling centre. Recycling centres are available in Vancouver’s False Creek and at the City of Burnaby’s Eco-centre.
Residents can also safely store the used oil or antifreeze and then check back with the BC Used Oil Management Association as they open new locations.
Meanwhile, Metro Vancouver will soon update the District of North Vancouver on an agreement between Metro Vancouver and BCUOMA for an option for recycling at the North Shore Transfer Station.
The British Columbia Used Oil Management Association is a not-for-profit group dedicated to collecting and recycling lubricating oil, oil filters, oil containers, antifreeze and antifreeze containers in BC.
The organisation’s goal is to provide residents with an eco-friendly and cost-effective way to dispose of the used oil etc.
Each year, approximately 50 million litres of oil and 3 million litres of antifreeze are collected and responsibly managed through its program, according to BCUOMA.
