Full closure of Marine Drive in CNV on Sunday

Staff report
November 14, 2020 2:35am

Marine Drive will be fully closed to vehicles tomorrow between Fell Avenue and Bewicke Avenue, according to an update by the City of North Vancouver.

The closure begins on Sunday, November 15, and will continue until 5 am on Monday, November 16.

This closure will allow the safe reconfiguring of traffic lanes.

Detours will be in place with traffic controllers on site, and local residents will have access to Marine Drive from Bewicke Avenue, if required.

The project brings the aging Mosquito Creek Bridge up to modern seismic standards.

Other alternative routes include, West 2nd Street and West 1st Street for lower level routing, and West 16th Street and Larson Road or Highway 1 for upper level routing.

Pedestrians on the southern side of Mosquito Creek are being detoured onto a new temporary bridge across Mosquito Creek.

The closure of Marine Drive is part of CNV’s plan to replace the aging Mosquito Creek Bridge to bring it up to modern seismic standards.

The Mosquito Creek Bridge was the first pre-stressed concrete bridge constructed in Canada in 1952. It was widened in 1973 and 1981 to accommodate the growth of the North Shore community.

In 2015, an inspection of the bridge’s condition recommended replacement due to corrosion.

The City of North Vancouver is contributing $6.55 million with funding support from TransLink and the federal and provincial government to replace the aging bridge.

“Once complete, the new bridge will offer significant safety and travel improvements for cyclists, pedestrians, transit users and drivers,” CNV says.
