Gas rates to increase 17.5 percent on January 1 for FortisBC customers

Staff report
December 11, 2024 3:28am

As of January 1, 2025, residential gas customers across most of British Columbia can expect an average increase of $14.25 monthly on their bills, FortisBC announced yesterday.

The rate adjustments, approved on an interim basis by the British Columbia Utilities Commission (BCUC), represent an overall increase of 17.5 percent for the average residential customer. Final rates could change pending a review of FortisBC’s 2025–2027 Rate Setting Framework, with a decision expected in mid-2025. Permanent rates are anticipated later in the year.

Why the Increase?

FortisBC stated that the rise in rates is necessary to fund critical system upgrades and long-term investments. These include projects like the Inland Gas Upgrades, Gibsons Capacity Upgrade, Coastal Transmission System Transmission Integrity Management Capabilities, and Pattullo Gas Line Replacement. Additionally, the changes reflect adjustments in storage and transport costs and an increasing incorporation of Renewable Natural Gas (RNG) to help reduce carbon emissions.

“Rate changes are never easy, and we understand this may impact our customers,” said Michelle Carman, vice president of customer service and external communications at FortisBC. “We’re committed to supporting our customers with tools, tips, and personalized solutions to help manage energy costs.”

FortisBC explained that it mitigates costs by purchasing gas during lower-priced summer months and storing it for winter use. Surplus gas is also sold back to the market, with savings passed on to customers. The company emphasized that there is no markup on the cost of gas—customers pay what FortisBC pays.

For most residential customers outside Fort Nelson, the increase will add about $14.25 per month to their bills, depending on usage. FortisBC reviews gas costs quarterly, and the next adjustment is scheduled for March 2025.

FortisBC encourages customers with questions about their bills or concerns about energy costs to contact its customer service team or visit the company’s website for tools and resources. For more details on FortisBC’s rates, visit fortisbc.com/rates.
