Grief counsellors at North Van schools after teen’s death

The counsellors will be present in both schools to assist students individually or in small groups
STAFF REPORT
January 13, 2020 3:42pm

Counsellors from the SD 44 Critical Incident Team will be present today at the two schools attended by the teenager who was killed in the crash on West Vancouver.

The counsellors will be present in both schools to assist students individually or in small groups.

The 17-year-old student attended Mountainside Secondary School, and Argyle Secondary School before that.

“Our hearts go out to the family and friends during this incredibly difficult time,” said Deneka Michaud, the communications manager of the school district.

The collision happened on January 11, 2020 shortly after 4 am in the 6300 blk of Marine Dr in West Vancouver.

WVPD officers arrived on scene and located the vehicle, a 2002 BMW sedan, at rest against a hydro pole. The vehicle had sustained extensive damage.

The driver, a 17-year-old boy from North Vancouver, was pronounced dead at the scene.

The lone passenger, a 19-year-old female from North Vancouver, was located at the scene and was being cared for by witnesses. She was later transported to hospital by ambulance with non-life-threatening injuries.

Early indications suggested that speed was likely a factor that led to the collision, although final factors that caused the crash have yet to be determined.

An investigation is underway.
