Metro Vancouver’s Grouse Grind Trail will officially reopen on Saturday, April 27, following the completion of annual maintenance, trail improvements, and a trailhead upgrade project.

This year’s upgrades include a new trailhead entrance with improved access, new seating, a water fountain, stretching bars, and better access for first responders. The project also saw the replacement of a foot bridge over a creek near the one-quarter mark and environmental restoration.

“The changes to the Grouse Mountain Regional Park trailhead are transformative—not only is the area more welcoming and attractive, but it responds to hikers’ needs by giving them space to warm up for their big climb, fill their water bottles, and familiarize themselves with the park maps,” said John McEwen, Vice Chair of Metro Vancouver’s Board of Directors and Chair of the Regional Parks Committee.

This year’s opening is a month earlier than last year due to the unseasonably dry and warm weather. Hikers are asked to remain vigilant regarding any behaviour that may cause wildfires.

A $3.5-million trail and site improvements project, funded by the Government of Canada and Province of BC, in partnership with Metro Vancouver, has been ongoing since 2021. The project aims to protect forest ecosystems while enhancing the visitor experience.

Please note that the Grouse Grind Trail will be closed all day on Monday, April 29, while Grouse Mountain Resort undertakes work related to the construction of a new gondola.

Grouse Grind Trail Information and Advice:

  • Daily open hours are 7:00 am to 6:30 pm
  • The 2.5-kilometre trail is a very steep and strenuous hike
  • Downhill hiking is not permitted on the Grouse Grind Trail — the Grouse Mountain Resort Skyride or the BCMC Trail are the only downhill options
  • Dogs are not permitted on the Grouse Grind Trail
  • Wear weather-appropriate clothing and sturdy footwear
  • Be prepared with water, a snack, and a cellphone
  • Leave enough time to finish your hike before it gets dark
