A new surgical robotics system funded by the Lions Gate Hospital Foundation is now transforming how surgeries are performed at Lions Gate Hospital, offering patients less invasive procedures and faster recovery times.

In a press release, Lions Gate Hospital Foundation said the Da Vinci Xi Robotic Surgical System is now in operation following several months of preparation and staff training. The system was purchased late last year through a $5.5-million donation to the Foundation.

Dr. Justin Lee, an attending physician in the Division of Urology, has completed 13 prostatectomies in the first two weeks of using the system. Lee controls the robot while seated at a console in the operating room.

The robotic arms are more precise and less invasive than traditional surgical techniques, leading to faster healing and reduced recovery times. Early patients have already spent less time in the hospital following surgery, the press release noted.

“When we can reduce recovery times, pain and discomfort, infections and complications that lead to re-admission we improve the quality of life of our patients and increase their chances of recovery,” Lee said.

The robotic system will be used across general surgery, urology, and gynecology, including procedures for bowel, rectal, bladder, and kidney cancers, hysterectomies, and complex hernia repairs. According to the press release, hundreds of patients a year are expected to benefit from the new technology.

The $5.5-million donation covered the purchase of the robot, additional instruments, a simulator, and software. Judy Savage, president and CEO of Lions Gate Hospital Foundation, said the hospital’s eight new operating rooms in the Paul Myers Tower provide the infrastructure needed to support advanced medical technology.

“Lions Gate Hospital Foundation is excited to champion progress and innovation, and we are extremely grateful to all of the donors who generously contributed to the cost of the robot,” Savage said.
