A resident of North Vancouver is offering a $200 reward if a chicken stolen from her backyard returns to the family alive.

Lindi Smith, a resident of the Upper Lonsdale area, is seeking assistance from the community after two young men stole Snowflake, her family’s beloved chicken, from their coop early Saturday, May 11, at 3:30 a.m. This is the first time in a decade that someone has stolen chicken from the family’s coop.

“We’ve had chickens for ten years and this is the first time someone has stolen one. I never thought we would need to protect against people,” Lindi Smith says. Smith first noticed the chicken was missing on Saturday evening. “I reviewed the footage from the previous 24 hours and found that at 3:24 am on Saturday, two young men had broken into the chicken coop and stolen Snowflake.”

The men, whose faces were concealed with T-shirts, were captured on CCTV using their cell phones and lights to look into the coop and steal the chicken. Lindi expressed her hope that it was merely a “stupid prank,” but as time passes, her optimism wanes regarding the chicken’s safe return.

“There is a police report, and they came by, but there’s not much they can do,” Lindi says. In response to the theft, the Smiths are now keeping the chicken in the living room. “We have had to worry about predators such as raccoons and hawks until now, but I never thought we would need to keep them predator-proof for people,” she says.

“The pet owners are devastated by the theft of Snowflake,” said Constable Mansoor Sahak, Media Relations Officer for the North Vancouver RCMP. “This case parallels the theft of a beloved family dog, emphasizing the profound impact on the owners and the urgent need for resolution.”

“Our hope is that someone out there knows the suspects or the whereabouts of Snowflake and will do the right thing and call police.”

Anyone with information about this incident, or who recognizes the suspects, is asked to call North Vancouver RCMP at 604-985-1311 and quote file #24-9290. Anyone who wishes to provide information but who wants to remain anonymous can contact CrimeStoppers at 1-800-222-TIPS (8477).
