Heavy rainfall in forecast for North Shore

Staff report
January 30, 2025 7:11am

Environment Canada has issued a rainfall warning for North Shore and western Fraser Valley as a low-pressure system moves into the region.

Light showers this morning are expected to intensify by midday, with heavy rainfall continuing through Friday before tapering off around midnight. Up to 50 mm of rain could accumulate, increasing the risk of localized flooding and water pooling on roads, mainly where the ground is frozen or near freezing.

As freezing levels drop along the South Coast, higher elevations near the mountains could see up to 4 cm of snow, especially during the heaviest rainfall overnight. However, freezing levels are expected to rise throughout the day on Friday.

Heavy downpours can lead to flash flooding and hazardous driving conditions. Residents are advised to exercise caution, monitor weather updates, and report severe conditions via email at BCstorm@ec.gc.ca or on social media using #BCStorm.

Snowfall Warning for Sea to Sky Region

Environment Canada has also issued a snowfall warning for the Sea to Sky Highway from Squamish to Whistler, with up to 20 cm of snow expected by late Friday night. Flurries this morning will intensify by midday as a low-pressure system approaches Howe Sound. Snowfall will persist throughout Friday before tapering off around midnight.

Mountain weather conditions can shift rapidly, leading to hazardous driving conditions. Drivers are urged to check road conditions at drivebc.ca, use winter tires or chains, and adjust to winter driving behavior.
