High streamflow advisory for North Shore

Staff report
March 7, 2025 7:37am

A high streamflow advisory is in place for several areas in British Columbia, including Howe Sound, the Sunshine Coast, Sea-to-Sky, the North Shore Mountains, Metro Vancouver, and the Fraser Valley. The warning comes as a strong storm is expected to bring heavy rain over the weekend.

Though major flooding is unexpected, the BC River Forecast Centre says rivers will rise quickly. However, fast-moving water can be dangerous, and low-lying areas could see minor flooding. The advisory also covers West Vancouver Island, including rivers near Tofino, Ucluelet, and Port Renfrew, as well as parts of Southern Vancouver Island, such as Duncan and Chemainus.

Heavy rain is expected to start Friday night and last through Sunday. Forecasts show West Vancouver Island could get between 150 and 200 millimetres of rain, while the South Coast Mountains may see 100 to 200 millimetres. Rising temperatures will also cause more runoff, as freezing levels are expected to climb to around 1,500 meters.

Stream levels are expected to rise Friday night, first in North Vancouver Island, before moving south. While major flooding is unlikely, smaller streams and poorly drained areas may see water pooling on roads. Officials are warning people to stay away from fast-moving rivers and flooded areas. The BC River Forecast Centre will provide further updates as needed.
