On June 22, BC Parks will be opening Joffre Lakes Provincial Park.
The park will be opened in partnership with Lil’wat Nation and N’Quatqua, under the new Joffre Lakes Park Visitor Use Management Strategy. A day-pass system will be in place to access the park.
The park has remained closed to visitors since March last year. In 2019, Joffre Lakes Park had 196,322 visitors, for a 222% increase since 2010.
In response, BC Parks has implemented several short-term measures, such as expanding the parking lots to increase capacity from 250 vehicles to 350.
The province is also adding washroom facilities at the main parking lot and overflow parking lot, and managing the 26 backcountry tent pads through a reservation system.
Illegal parking and associated safety concerns on Highway 99 will also be addressed.
Beginning June 22, BC Parks is also implementing free day-use passes for Stawamus Chief trail, Garibaldi Park trailheads at Diamond Head, Rubble Creek, and Cheakamus and Golden Ears and Mount Robson parks.
