On Sunday June 26, 2022, volunteers, donors, members, and advocates of the North Shore Restorative Justice Society (NSRJ) will walk 5 kilometers to raise awareness and funds for their restorative justice programs. All proceeds help residents on the North Shore access critical restorative justice programs, which help to repair the harms that victims of crime experience face and teach youth how to peacefully handle conflict. Their goal is to raise $25,000 to address the rising demand for their programs, projected to increase by 50% from last year.
The Walk-a-Thon is the NSRJ’s biggest annual fundraising event. Last year, the NSRJ supported nearly one thousand North Shore residents through their Restorative Response Program, which works with victims, offenders, and communities to repair and learn from incidents of conflict and crime; as well as their Restorative Justice in Education Program, which works with local schools to help youth develop skills for preventing and responding to conflict and harm.
Residents of the North Shore communities, and advocates of restorative justice, are encouraged to consider joining the Walk-a-Thon or making a donation at nsrj.ca/walk2022. There are both in-person and virtual options to join the Walk-a-Thon!
What is restorative justice?
Restorative justice is a holistic approach for responding to crime and conflict, focused on dialogue, reparation, and healing. The goal is to empower victims and communities, hold those who have committed crimes accountable, and reduce repeat offences. It is recognized in the Criminal Code of Canada as an effective alternative to the court system.
