The District of West Vancouver has received a proposal for the demolition of a house and replacing it with a heritage home that will be shipped from Vancouver on a barge.
This Heritage Alteration Permit will allow for demolition of the existing house at 4777 Pilot House Road in Caulfeild area and the relocation of the heritage home from Vancouver’s Kerrisdale neighbourhood.
A one-storey plus lower/basement level wood frame house, the Doctor-Stewart residence is a heritage structure of unique character and craftsmanship, says the applicant.

“Rare for its Canadian interpretation of the California Arts & Crafts style, Doctor House’s unusual architectural elements included: adzed cedar log pillars, dark fir wainscoting, dark fir plywood abstract salmon and raven light fixtures, custom English hardware, a built-in grandfather clock, locally-made clinker brick with California tile fireplaces, a bird themed stained-glass window and innovative pressed steel radiators,” notes the proponent on their website.
The heritage home will be located in the same location as the existing house at 4777 Pilot House Road and will be approximately the same height and size. The proposal also includes a new Coach House at the back of the lot. The proposed Coach House will be two storeys and have a basement.
The applicant, Susan Walker, is hosting an in-person preliminary public information meeting on March 1 to present the preliminary development proposal to residents. The meeting will be held at St. Francis-in-the-Wood Church, 4773 South Piccadilly Road, from 5 pm to 7 pm. A short presentation will start at 5:30 pm followed by a question and answer period.
This meeting is being hosted by the applicant. The proposal has not been formally submitted and is still within the preliminary development application stage.
