Government of BC has allocated $750,000 to the District of North Vancouver for the restoration and daylighting of Kilmer Creek.

District of North Vancouver is among the 18 communities in the province that have been approved for more than $12 million in provincial emergency preparedness funding.

The intent of the funding is to support structural flood mitigation projects and to prevent, eliminate or reduce hazards through structural flood mitigation projects.

New Democrat MLA Bowinn Ma is welcoming the funding to restore Kilmer Creek near Argyle Secondary and remove potential local flood hazards.

“Climate change affects us all and the increased risk of floods is just one of the many challenges communities will face,” said MLA Bowinn Ma.

“While we tackle the issue as a species, we must also prepare our communities locally. This provincial funding is an investment into the safety of people and property along Kilmer Creek against the risk of flooding.”

Kilmer Creek was enclosed at its outfall in 1969, which reduced stream capacity and created a flood hazard.

The portion of the creek on the western edge of Argyle Secondary School will be daylighted, a process of removing obstacles and uncovering waterways.

This work will provide enhanced erosion protection and remove the flood hazard to both public and private property in the area.
