FortisBC has recognized the Kiwanis North Shore Housing Society with its 2025 Energy Conservation Leader Award for outstanding efforts in improving energy efficiency and reducing emissions.
In a press release, FortisBC said the annual award, established in 2018, honours non-profit housing providers that demonstrate leadership in conservation, energy management, and sustainable practices.
Kiwanis North Shore Housing received the recognition for its $568,000 investment in gas absorption heat pumps and domestic hot water boiler replacements at two West Vancouver buildings. According to the society, these upgrades will reduce natural gas use by 23.7 per cent and cut greenhouse gas emissions by 10 tonnes annually—the equivalent of removing nearly three cars from the road.
“We are very proud to be recognized for our work improving building efficiency and exemplary energy use,” said CEO Stefan Baune in a statement. He added that environmental sustainability remains one of the organization’s core strategic goals.
The society has also developed Kiwanis Village West, which features the largest photovoltaic solar system by output on the North Shore. The installation includes 264 high-efficiency panels generating 146.5 megawatt-hours of electricity annually, enough to power 15 houses or 22 apartments for a year.
FortisBC said it hopes the award encourages other housing providers to invest in conservation initiatives and adopt responsible energy practices
