Lack of dog-friendly spaces in Lower Lonsdale: CNV report

Staff report
June 28, 2022 12:21pm

There is a lack of dog-friendly public spaces in the Lower Lonsdale neighbourhood, according to a new report by the City of North Vancouver.

The overall number of licensed dogs in the City is increasing, and Lower Lonsdale has the greatest density of licensed dogs, notes the ‘dog-friendly city’ report that was presented to council on June 20. The report suggests several management, planning and design actions on how to make the city a better place for dogs.

Below are some key findings of the report:

There are many parks and public spaces where dogs are currently prohibited, and dog complaints are highest in areas without off-leash areas.

Dog waste diversion rates are increasing, with 9.3 % increase from 2019 to 2021.

There are many parks where dogs are currently prohibited.

Dog complaints are highest in areas without off-leash areas.

The report also finds that most dog owners are willing to walk 10 to 20 minutes to get to an off-leash dog area.

CNV now plans to review its dog bylaw, reconsider strategies to increase licensed dog, and minimize impacts on wildlife and environment. CNV will also identify new opportunities for leash-optional dog areas, and encourage private developers to provide dog amenities on private property.

I hate to be cynical but… If I interpret the bureaucratic mumbo-jumbo printed here, what it really means is…

“We have identified a problem of concern (not enough spaces for dogs in lower Lonsdale).

Therefore, we are committed to making this problem even worse.

    You’re welcome.”

If the City knows that the number of dogs are increasing then the onus should be put on the developers to have doggie parks incorporated in the design of their buildings, as is stated in the above article. With each new high-rise comes dozens of dogs. Just stand outside of Local on Lonsdale and you will see just how many dogs go in and out of that building everyday. The newest big tower on East 17th is the same. And a new building is going up at the former ESSO station on 17th street, bringing with it more dogs! My yard has become a dog toilet in spite of signs asking owners to clean up after their dogs. Check out what the City has to say on its website just how much dog waste there is. Here’s a quote from the website: “20 to 30 % of bacteria in water samples from urban watersheds can be linked to dog waste.” PS: I like dogs. Owners, please be responsible.
