North Vancouver RCMP arrested a man after finding a loaded firearm during a traffic stop earlier this month.

On September 4, officers stopped a man riding a bicycle without a helmet in the 500 block of West Keith Road. Police said the man had various weapons. He was arrested, searched, and taken into custody.

A loaded rifle was among the items seized. The suspect, identified as Robert Kesson of North Vancouver, was formally charged by the BC Prosecution Service on September 5 with careless use of a firearm, possession of an unauthorized firearm, possession of a loaded restricted firearm, and possession of a weapon while prohibited.

Kesson remains in custody. His next court appearance is set for September 15.

“While the individual was arrested without incident, it is alleged that a loaded firearm was located and seized before it could be used in a crime,” said Corporal Mansoor Sahak of North Vancouver RCMP in a news release. “This case speaks to the importance of proactive policing efforts in public safety and how seemingly low risk interactions can evolve into more serious criminal investigations. Every firearm removed from the wrong hands reduces the risk of violence and helps us protect the public.”
