Christien Stringam, a resident of New Westminster, has been charged with one count of Possession of Child Pornography.
On July 11, 2024, the New Westminster Police Department Major Crime Unit arrested a local man following an investigation into child sexual abuse material. The suspect, 45-year-old Christien Stringam, faces charges of possessing child pornography after a tip-off from the RCMP Integrated Child Exploitation Unit of British Columbia prompted the investigation.
Sergeant Andrew Leaver of the NWPD emphasized the severity and impact of these crimes. “The possession of this material provides a depraved incentive for those distributing and creating child sexual abuse material to continue their activities,” he said. “It’s a cycle that causes far-reaching harm to children, their families, caregivers, and communities.”
Leaver also highlighted the growing challenges faced by law enforcement in combatting child exploitation, noting that investigations have become increasingly complex and resource-intensive with the emergence of new technologies, such as AI-generated images. “Currently, the New Westminster Police Department doesn’t have an investigator dedicated to child sexual exploitation investigations,” he added, underlining the strain on police resources.
Following his arrest, Stringam was released from custody with several court-imposed conditions. Among these restrictions, he is prohibited from communicating with or being alone with anyone under 18. The NWPD urges the community to remain vigilant and report any suspicious online activity as these types of crimes continue to increase in frequency.
