North Vancouver RCMP are warning the public about a recent series of scam phone calls that appear as though they are coming from the North Vancouver Detachment.
Scammers have been able to “spoof” calls in order to make them appear as though they are coming from the detachment’s non-emergency number, which is (604) 985-1311.
A scammer will fraudulently introduce themselves as an officer, sometimes using the name of a real officer they’ve been able to find on the internet.
A scammer will often follow a formula where they say you have an urgent problem, offer a solution, and then tell you to send them money.
Less commonly, they will try to entice you with money, such as a government benefit. This is all trickery, classic “carrot and stick” tactics to try to get you to do what they want, said Sgt. Peter DrVries..
DeVries said the RCMP do not act as collection agents and won’t be sending a policeman to arrest the person for outstanding CRA related debts or otherwise.
If a scamster says it is an automated call, it’s lie.
Other lies including telling their potential victims their Social Insurance Number (SIN) has been compromised, identity has been stolen, or that police are on the way to arrest them or that a magistrate has rendered a judgement against the person.
