Local artist Art Ikuta has won the international Illustrators of the Future contest, earning him a trip to Hollywood for a week-long workshop and awards ceremony. His winning artwork will also be published in the anthology L. Ron Hubbard Presents Writers of the Future Volume 42.
In a news release, contest organizers said Ikuta was among the winners of the L. Ron Hubbard Illustrators of the Future Contest, now in its 36th year. The program is considered one of the most prestigious competitions for emerging artists and writers in the science fiction and fantasy genres.
The contest, created in 1988, is a companion to the Writers of the Future competition. Science fiction author L. Ron Hubbard founded both to give new writers and artists a chance to break into the speculative fiction field. Past winners have gone on to publish novels, illustrate books and comics, and contribute to television and film projects.
Judges for the illustration contest include well-known fantasy and science fiction artists such as Bob Eggleton, Larry Elmore and Echo Chernik.
The Writers and Illustrators of the Future program has produced 41 anthology volumes and awarded more than $1 million in cash prizes and royalties. More information is available at www.WritersoftheFuture.com.
