A traffic intersection in North Vancouver has the dubious distinction of being among the top crash intersections in the Province.

There were 130 crashes at the intersection of Capilano Road and Marine Drive and Mathias Road and Turning Lane, according to the latest ICBC data released for the year 2022.

Here are the other four intersections that follow for most crashes in North Vancouver: 122 crashes at Ironworkers Memorial Bridge, 104 crashes at Bowser Avenue and Capilano Road and Capilano Road on-ramp and off-ramp, 91 crashes at Mosquito Creek Bridge and TransCanada Highway and Westview Drive and Westview drive off-ramp.

The fifth most dangerous intersection was Mountain Highway and Trans Canada Highway with 62 crashes. However, this data includes casualty and property damage only. Casualty crashes are crashes that result in injury or fatality, while Property Damage Only are crashes that result in material damage. Over the BC Day long weekend, as many as 387 people are injured in 1,235 crashes in the Lower Mainland every year. On Vancouver Island, as many as 67 people are injured in 306 crashes on Vancouver Island every year, according to ICBC.

Speed, impaired driving and distracted driving remain the top reasons for crashes in BC. A survey commissioned by ICBC two years ago found an increase in self-reported phone use. The Ipsos Reid survey conducted in May 2021 found that almost all drivers (93 per cent) believe texting while driving is risky, yet 40 per cent admit they still use their phone at least one out of every 10  trips.
