North Vancouver man jailed after taking stolen vehicle on joy ride

staff report
September 14, 2023 3:51pm

A North Vancouver man has received a jail sentence following the successful investigation by North Vancouver RCMP.

On February 16th, 2023, a man reported being involved in a hit run involving a Chrysler Pacifica. It was alleged the Chrysler rear ended the man’s vehicle and then sped away at a high rate of speed driving eastbound on West 3rd Street in North Vancouver.

Officers immediately flooded the area and quickly located the Chrysler near 3rd Street and Lonsdale Avenue. When officers attempted to pull the vehicle over by conducting a traffic stop, the vehicle again fled at a high rate of speed, weaving dangerously in and out of traffic. Due to the high risk to public safety, officers did not pursue the vehicle.

The Chrysler was later located that evening at a gas station in the 100 block of Mountain Highway. The Chrysler was determined to be stolen from Capilano Mall earlier in the day. Officers were able to review CCTV footage from nearby businesses and quickly identify the suspect.

The suspect was later arrested after a report to the BC Prosecution Service was submitted recommending charges of possession of stolen property, failure to stop after accident, flight from police, dangerous operation of a motor vehicle, and driving while prohibited. On September 7, 2023, Jackson Leo of North Vancouver plead guilty and was sentenced to 24 days in jail and was given credit for serving 37 days in actual custody.

We hope this sort of outcome sends a message to criminals that police do not tolerate dangerous behaviours that put the public at risk, said Cst. Mansoor Sahak of the North Vancouver RCMP. Our highly trained investigators and front-line officers will continue to tirelessly pursue criminals leaving no stone unturned.
