A North Vancouver man is facing charges for driving while prohibited and possessing contraband tobacco after BC Highway Patrol stopped him on Highway 99 near Downtown Squamish last weekend.
In a news release, BC Highway Patrol said the 42-year-old was pulled over around 11:10 a.m. on August 9 and was found to be driving while prohibited. Officers also discovered about seven cases of unstamped contraband tobacco in the pickup he was driving. Police said the tobacco was suspected to be supplying an illegal store.
“The driver of the pickup was suspected to be operating an illegal tobacco store,” said Corporal Michael McLaughlin with BC Highway Patrol. “Now he will face a court date for both prohibited driving and possession of an unstamped tobacco product under Section 32(1) of the Excise Act.”
On the same day, officers also stopped a 40-year-old Abbotsford man riding a Suzuki motorcycle at 196 km/h in an 80 zone near Furry Creek. Police said the rider failed roadside breath tests, was given a 90-day driving ban, and had his motorcycle impounded for 30 days.
McLaughlin said the outcome could have been much worse. “On the bright side, the motorcyclist did not die or kill anyone else. Excessive speed plus alcohol impairment is a recipe that we see time and again in fatal collisions.”
Highway Patrol reminded drivers that unsafe behaviour on the Sea to Sky can result in heavy fines, charges, and loss of driving privileges.
