Staff report
June 13, 2024 8:09am

North Vancouver RCMP has arrested one person after officers observed a man attempting to break the lock off a bicycle using a pair of bolt cutters. On June 10, 2024, at around 6 pm, officers were conducting proactive patrols along the Marine Drive corridor when they observed a man attempting to cut the lock of a bicycle with bolt cutters.

Officers watched from a distance as the man struggled to cut the lock before removing the bike’s seat and trying to use that to open the lock. After an unsuccessful attempt to steal the bike, the man gave up.  Officers quickly moved in and arrested the man for attempted theft and mischief. As the investigation unfolded, officers noted the man was on conditions not to possess break-in tools and not to touch bicycles.

During the subsequent search of the suspect, police located stolen identification cards belonging to someone else. The man faces multiple charges and is set to appear in court on July 17.

“People often ask what our officers do when they are not directly responding to active service calls,” said Constable Mansoor Sahak, Media Relations Officer for the North Vancouver RCMP. “Our response to them, as shown by the work of these officers, is that we are often proactively patrolling high crime areas to prevent and deter crime from occurring. This is an example of intelligence-led policing using information provided directly by our crime analysts to respond to emerging crime trends in North Vancouver and beyond.”

If your bike has been stolen, please report the theft to the North Vancouver RCMP at (604)-985-1311.
