A collision on Coquihalla Highway on January 8 has claimed the life of one person. The incident occurred approximately 45 kilometres south of Merritt, where a Ford F150 travelling southbound tragically crossed the center median ditch, colliding with a semi-truck and trailer in the northbound slow lane.
The F150’s driver was declared dead, and the passenger was airlifted to the hospital, while the semi-truck driver sustained minor injuries. The exact cause of the collision is under investigation, according to S/Sgt. Josh Roda, who expressed condolences, stating, ‘Our hearts go out to the family of the deceased.’
With winter storm warnings in effect for Coquihalla Highway, including the stretch from Hope to Merritt, Highway 3 from Hope to Princeton via Allison Pass, and Highway 3 from Paulson Summit to Kootenay Pass, authorities are asking people to be cautious. Snowfall is expected to reach 20 to 30 cm, accompanied by strong winds near the summits, with gusts up to 70 km/h causing near zero visibility in blowing snow.
Merritt RCMP urges the public to exercise caution and adapt to winter driving conditions. Witnesses or those with dash camera footage are asked to contact Merritt RCMP at 250-378-4262. As the storm unfolds, authorities advise considering postponing non-essential travel until conditions improve to ensure safety on the roads.”
