Power outage in North Vancouver: Thousands remain without power

Crews are receiving reports of downed power lines, which should be treated as an emergency.

Strong winds and heavy rain left more than 95,000 BC Hydro customers in the Lower Mainland, including on the North Shore. Customers are also waiting for the power to be restored in Sunshine Coast, Vancouver Island and Gulf Islands, where many remained without power last night.

In a press release, BC Hydro said their crews worked overnight and have restored power to more than 69,000 customers.

“The wind knocked down trees and branches causing them to come into contact with BC Hydro’s electrical equipment. As a result, crews have been busy repairing damaged power lines, poles and other equipment,” BC Hydro said.

As of 8:30 a.m., about 26,000 customers remain without power, primarily in Duncan, Ladysmith, Maple Ridge and North Vancouver. Work will continue throughout the day, and BC Hydro hopes to have all impacted customers restored today. Crews are receiving reports of downed power lines. A downed power line is an emergency. Call 911 and stay at least 10 metres back. BC Hydro crews will work with first responders to make the area safe.

As repair work continues, BC Hydro will provide updated estimates for power restoration as they become available at bchydro.com/outages. “BC Hydro understands that outages are disruptive and thanks its customers for their patience as crews work to repair the damage and restore power.”

    It is WELL BEYOND TIME, that we all address the obvious. WHY IS BC HYDRO **NOT** PLACING THE SPIDER WEB OF WIRES OVER OUR HEADS, U N D E R G R O U N D ? ? ! ? ! ?

BC HYDRO, TELUS, Shaw, “Rogers together with Shaw”, the lot of them, need to stop covering us in a network of wires.

Trees and branches fall down. That, we all know. Yes, it will cost money.

TELUS made $496 MILLION IN PROFIT LAST YEAR. They can afford it.

BC Hydro, to quote – “annual revenue presented a trend of growth over the period in consideration, peaking at some 7.59 billion Canadian dollars in the fiscal year 2022.” They can afford it.

Pretty soon, ‘they’ won’t be able to tell us to ‘go fly a kite’ because it will be impossible to do so.

    Put the wires u n d e r g r o u n d.
