Marine search crews rescued two people on Friday night after they were stranded on Whyte Islet, located off Whytecliff Park in West Vancouver.
According to a news release from Royal Canadian Marine Search and Rescue (RCMSAR) Station 1, the pair called for help shortly after 9 p.m. on Saturday, May 17. Crews were able to reach the area within 20 minutes. The two people had crossed from Whytecliff Park to the islet earlier in the evening to take photographs.
When they tried to return, they found the connecting peninsula submerged; they had misread the tide chart. Search crews spotted them at the northwest corner of the islet but had to come ashore from the east side due to difficult terrain. By then, it was dark, rainy, and the rocks were slick with moss. Despite the difficult conditions, rescuers reached the pair quickly.
“They were in good spirits, albeit quite cold,” RCMSAR said. “They did the right thing and dialed #727 on their cell phone. This, along with the alternative *16 puts you through to JRCC and is the correct thing to do in this situation. Attempting to swim in the dark or waiting out the tide could have led to a much more dangerous situation in the cool wet weather.”
The two did not require medical care and were transported safely to the Horseshoe Bay Pier.
