RCTC tickles the funny bone with its hilarious ‘Screwball Comedy’

staff report
May 27, 2022 12:06pm

The Royal Canadian Theatre Company (RCTC) is presenting another fast-paced, clever and quirky comedy this spring. ‘Screwball Comedy’ is touring to six different theatres starting from April/May in Maple Ridge (The ACT Arts Centre) and ending its run at Kay Meek Arts Centre, West Vancouver (dates, venue and tickets at the bottom).

The unforgettable Cary Grant and Katherine Hepburn were just two of the stars of the Screwball Comedies that were so hugely popular in Hollywood in the 1930s and 40s. Fast talking, wisecracking hilarity that had them rolling in the aisles back in the day, is now given an update and made even funnier by the foremost of popular Canadian playwrights – the brilliant Norm Foster.

The Royal Canadian Theatre Company has scored a major scoop by being the only theatre company to bring you the Western Canadian Premiere of this affectionate and hilarious spoof, directed by Langley’s Ellie King and featuring outrageous characters (all played by just four actors) with the added spice of a mystery.

The year is 1938 and the courageous and hardworking Mary Hayes is trying to find a new career. She sets her sights on the male-dominated world of newspaper journalism. The editor-in-chief pits her against his self-absorbed ace reporter Jeff Kincaid. If Jeff writes a better story, he gets to keep his job. If Mary wins, she will replace the star newshound.

What story do they cover? A society wedding! A nod to the zany screwball comedies of that time period, this play is full of snappy banter, goofy characters and humour that will have you falling out of your seat. Suitable for older children upwards.

VENUE: McEwen Theatre, Kay Meek Arts Centre

3:00pm May 28 | 29
7:30pm May 27 | 28
