District of North Vancouver staff is recommending that a cannabis store application in the Lions Gate area of the municipality be rejected by the council.
DNV council will discuss the proposal at a council meeting today.
The staff suggestion comes following an application for a cannabis store at 1761 Capilano Road. Before issuing a cannabis retail store licence, the Provincial Liquor and Cannabis Regulation Branch (LCRB) requires confirmation of a positive recommendation from the District of North Vancouver.
The site is located on the west side of Capilano Road between Curling Road and Fullerton Avenue in the Lions Gate Village Centre, within the Lions Gate Village and Marine Drive Corridor key growth centre. Two cannabis stores have been approved at this location.
The application is for a third location and as this exceeds the number recommended by the Non-Medical Retail Cannabis Policy, staff recommends that the application be rejected. However, it can be reconsidered in the future, staff adds.
Currently, there is a three-storey building with professional businesses, though the building is undergoing renovations after a fire that occurred last year. To date, there are 12 stores across the North Shore, four in District of North Vancouver, six in the City of North Vancouver and two in the District of West Vancouver.
