A West Vancouver resident is urging police and the District to crack down on speeding and loud vehicles along Marine Drive, saying the busy corridor has become “almost like a drag strip.”
In an email to the West Vancouver Police Department, Sgt. Stephen France and Mayor Mark Sager on August 5, the resident described cars racing between Taylor Way and 24th Street, motorcycles exceeding noise limits, and drivers running stop signs on Bellevue Avenue.
“The noise from some of these cars and motorcycles is way above allowable decibel levels. I’m positive you can hear these cars from the WV Municipal Hall,” they wrote. The resident also suggested the District consider cameras to catch noise and traffic light violations, similar to a plan underway in Saanich.
In his reply, Sgt. France said police have been conducting “active enforcement along the Bellevue/Marine corridor this year and will continue to do so.” He said WVPD has increased ticketing and inspection orders for loud vehicles. “We are aware that many motorcycles, in particular, do not comply with the applicable noise regulations,” he wrote.
France noted that some high-performance vehicles come from the factory with exhaust systems that bypass noise limits. Those standards are overseen federally by Transport Canada. He encouraged residents also to raise concerns with their Member of Parliament.
