North Vancouver residents are urging the District to install pedestrian-activated flashing lights at a busy crosswalk on Capilano Road, citing repeated close calls and safety concerns.

The petition, started by local resident Meghan Mitchell on Change.org, focuses on the marked crosswalk between Capilano Park Road and Mount Crown Road. Neighbours say drivers often fail to stop, creating dangerous conditions for families, seniors, people with disabilities, and those accessing nearby trails and parks.

In the petition, Mitchell wrote that “due to blind spots, heavy speeding, and poor visibility, pedestrians often aren’t seen until the last second — if at all.” She said many residents now avoid using the crossing out of fear.

As many as 494 people have signed and shared personal experiences. Michael, a North Vancouver resident, said, “This is a very sketchy crosswalk that I use regularly. I’ve seen numerous vehicles speed by without regard for pedestrians. The hazard pole in the middle has been bent or knocked over too on occasion.”

Another supporter, Blake, who lives on Mount Crown Road, said he does not feel safe crossing with his children. “Cars driving up Capilano Rd. come round the bend speeding almost always, and it is a difficult crosswalk to get seen at,” he wrote.

Scott, who also signed the petition, described a close call with his family: “I took my wife and 2 kids to a nearby trail and while crossing back, a white Tesla almost took out my wife and youngest in the stroller. Something had to be done with this crossing before someone innocent gets killed!”

The petition argues that pedestrian-activated rapid flashing lights would be a simple and cost-effective way to improve visibility and driver awareness. As of this week, hundreds of residents have signed in support. Petitioners are also encouraging people to email the District mayor and council directly at council@dnv.org to demand safety improvements.

Another supporter, Blake, who lives on Mount Crown Road, said he does not feel safe crossing with his children. “Cars driving up Capilano Rd. come round the bend speeding almost always, and it is a difficult crosswalk to get seen at,” he wrote.
