Saanich shoot-out: Explosive devices found in suspects’ vehicle

Staff report
June 30, 2022 7:17am

Explosive devices were discovered in a suspect’s vehicle during a shoot-out at a Saanich bank that injured six police officers. Two suspects were also killed in the shootout that took place this Tuesday at a bank in Saanich.

Homes and businesses in close proximity were evacuated for safety, while the BC RCMP Provincial Explosive Disposal Unit (EDU) neutralized the devices. The explosive devices were transported to Hartland Landfill Facility by EDU and were safely destroyed. Some residents and businesses remain unable to return to their homes and places of work as officers continue to process the crime scene.

In an update, the investigating agency, Vancouver Island Integrated Major Crime Unit, said officers continue to investigate the potential of a third suspect involved in this incident. However, police don’t believe there is any risk to the public.

Six officers suffered gunshot wounds in the incident. Three officers have been released from hospital and are recovering at home with their families, while three sustained what were considered life-threatening injuries, and remain in hospital following surgery. One of them will require additional surgeries and treatment over the coming months, and one remains in the Intensive Care Unit following surgery and will require additional surgeries and treatment over the coming months.
