Politics was never a path I expected, but my journey as a nurse revealed the impact of issues like poverty, housing insecurity, and access to services on health. I realized I couldn’t address systemic problems from the clinic alone, which led me to advocacy. As the Vancouver Councillor for Nurses and Nurse Practitioners of BC, I’ve championed increased access to healthcare, improved nursing retention and recruitment, and advanced free prescription contraception.
I’ve also helped establish gender-based violence projects on the North Shore and played a key role in setting up forensic nursing services at Lions Gate Hospital to ensure survivors receive the specialised care they need. But advocacy alone isn’t enough- I realised we need a government that is taking action and is not afraid of making bold decisions. That’s why I’m running with the BC NDP in the upcoming provincial election. The BC NDP has shown that it’s willing to take bold steps on critical issues like healthcare, affordability, housing and climate action. For example, to address affordability, the BC NDP:
Has made contraception free
Reduced childcare fees in half
Cut MSP premiums
Provided free transit to children under the age of 12
Provided families with BC hydro rebates
Frozen ICBC rates
To make life even more affordable for you, we are:
Giving an immediate $1,000 tax relief to families,
Providing families with affordable before and after school program,
Providing free school lunches for children under the age of 12,
Increasing the senior supplement to $149 a month and
Providing free transit for seniors during off-peak hours.
We are also hiring more nurses and doctors, building a new acute centre at Lions Gate Hospital, expanding mental health services and allowing pharmacists to provide medications for minor ailments.
These are only some examples of our platform but these are real, tangible changes that are making a difference in people’s lives—and it’s the kind of action I want to continue as your representative in the BC Legislature.
I’m proud to be part of a team that is committed to putting people first. As someone who has lived in West Vancouver-Capilano for most of my life, I understand the unique challenges our community faces. We need to protect and improve our healthcare system, not make reckless cuts that will endanger patient outcomes. We need to ensure housing is affordable, transportation is accessible, and climate action is a priority. And above all, we need a representative who will listen, understand, and act on the needs of our community.
On October 19th, vote for me, Sara Eftekhar, as your BC NDP candidate for West Vancouver-Capilano. Together, we can build a community where everyone has the opportunity to thrive.
